What is art? Why do we value it? How can we take a closer look and come to new understandings about it?

The new ArtZeum at the Telfair’s Jepson Center for the Arts invites people to explore big questions about art and its importance. Located in a landmark new building by architect Moshe Safdie, the ArtZeum is an interactive gallery where storytelling, media and open-ended experiences challenge visitors to explore big ideas about art and architecture.

Hands On! worked with Telfair’s executive director, board, and senior education and curatorial teams to concept this new gallery. Together, we defined the ArtZeum’s goals, themes and approach to this complex subject. Our main challenge was to make a potentially daunting topic accessible to visitors of all ages. Our solution was to design an intriguing, provocative space where visitors create connections that spark a deeper relationship with art. Using artworks and artifacts from the Telfair’s collection, the ArtZeum challenges viewers to look closer, question their assumptions and form their own ideas about art.
